The Phoenix wrestlers traveled to Cuyahoga Heights to participate in the Redskin Invitational this past weekend. Three members of the team placed in the top six in their respective weight class. The team scored 35 points for an 11th place finish.
Robert Bouchonville (132) led the team with a 4th place finish. Bouchonville had a six person round robin pool where he had to wrestle everyone in the weight class. With a 2-3 record, he secured his spot on the podium, his first tournament placement of the new season. During the second round, he let a third place finish slip out of his grasp when he lost a 10-5 lead when he was pinned with 2 seconds left in the match. Bouchonville’s recorded two pins for his wins at 2:46 and 1:36.
James Thomas (152) and Riley Horning (182) also went 2-3 on the weekend. They both qualified for the fifth/sixth place match by obtaining a 2-2 record in their 5 person pool.
Thomas had two first period pins in nearly identical times. The first at 1:15 and the second at 1:20. Horning had a quick 51 second pin in the first period and a 7-1 decision. Both wrestlers lost their final match by fall to earn 6th place.
The Phoenix will take part in the J.B. Firestone Tournament at Black River on Saturday, December 17th. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 am.
